How to use Prime Pantry get groceries and household staples delivered to your door

It may just be the easiest way to get your kitchen and grocery necessities — particularly those of the boxed variety like cereals, peanut butter, bread, and other packaged goods. As Amazon notes, the service is perfect for getting “snacks, breakfast foods, beverages, beauty and personal care items, and household products.”

While there are plenty of other grocery delivery services these days, few have the geographic reach or selection that Amazon can provide, and of course, few are quite as affordable.

If you’re considering treating yourself to Prime Pantry in advance (or in honor) of Amazon Prime Day, here’s what you’ll need to know about using the service.

1. Sign up for an Amazon Prime membership.

In order to use Prime Pantry, you’ll have to be a Prime member. Signing up is easy — just click this link. You’ll get 30 days for free, and if you’re hooked by the two-day free shipping, access to Prime Video, and of course, access to Prime Pantry, you’ll have to pay $119 per year to continue this membership (or $12.99 per month).

2. Select the Prime Pantry add-on.

Just head over to the Prime Pantry homepage, where you’ll be prompted to try out the service for free for 30 days. After that, you’ll be billed $4.99 a month for continued access.

3. Set your delivery zip code.

While Prime Pantry is widely available across the United States, actual items available for purchase vary by location. Be sure to set your delivery location to ensure that the items you want are in stock near you.

4. Start shopping.

After activating your membership, you can start your grocery shopping spree. You’ll be able to identify eligible Pantry items, as they’re all marked with the Prime Pantry logo beneath their prices. Prime Pantry members are also eligible for special deals, coupons, and promotions not available to other Prime members.

5. Proceed to Checkout.

When you’re ready to go, just click “Proceed to Checkout.” You’ll receive free shipping on any orders over $10 (which is quite easy to reach). If you don’t hit this threshold, you’ll have to pay a flat $5.99 shipping fee.

The history of how Uber went from the most feared startup in the world to its massive IPO

Ten years ago, a company called UberCab made a splash in San Francisco by letting you hail a car with your smartphone. Since then, the company — now known just as Uber — has spread like wildfire across the globe. 

But the road hasn’t been easy.

While its valuation continued to climb over the years, Uber has also fought rivals and regulators as it has transformed from a black-car service into a sprawling empire going after the markets for both food delivery and self-driving cars. It has confronted threats from the taxi industry, endured backlash from its drivers and users both, and weathered internal strife and scandal, including the ouster of controversial former CEO Travis Kalanick.

Now, in the wake of Uber’s IPO, we take a look at how we got here.

April 2007: Travis Kalanick becomes a millionaire at age 30. He sells his startup, called RedSwoosh, to a cloud company called Akamai for $23 million. It’s the second company’s he’s been involved in since he dropped out of UCLA in 1998.

December 2008: Travis Kalanick attends the LeWeb technology conference in Paris, where he first hears the idea for Uber from StumbleUpon founder Garrett Camp. Camp tells a story about spending $800 on a private driver for New Year’s, and how splitting the cost with a lot of people would make black car services more affordable.

August 2013: Uber moves into India and Africa, and it closes a Series C funding round that sees an enormous $258 million investment from Google Ventures, now known as GV. This round values Uber at $3.76 billion.

December 2013: A lawsuit, on behalf of 35,000 current and former Uber drivers, is filed against the company. Drivers claim they should be treated as employees instead of contract workers, which would force Uber to pay them minimum wage and provide them with benefits. The case was settled out of court in 2016.

February 2014: Uber weathers its first major scandal. In an interview with GQ, Kalanick calls the service “boob-er,” because it’s helped him attract “women on demand.”

April 2014: Uber begins its UberRush service, which brings a bicycle delivery service to Manhattan. The service starts at $7 — a $3 base fare and $4 per mile. Uber shut down Rush in March 2018.

December 2014: Uber raises $600 million from Chinese search powerhouse Baidu. Baidu’s mobile-search and maps apps begin to integrate with Uber, and it seemed that Uber was gearing up for a fight with other prominent Chinese tech companies.

December 2014: Uber is banned in India’s Delhi region after a passenger accused her driver of rape. The case raises criticism and concern of Uber’s licensing and screening procedures for its drivers.

May 2016: Uber and ride-hailing competitor Lyft both exit Austin, Texas, after the city’s voters backed a measure that would require fingerprint background checks for drivers. Both companies returned to the city in 2017.

July 2016: Uber announced in mid-July that it had completed its two billionth trip, just six months after reaching one billion rides.

July 2016: A federal judge ruled that Uber “engaged in fraudulent and arguably criminal conduct” when it used an investigative firm to conduct a background check on a plaintiff in a lawsuit.

The plaintiff accused Kalanick of violating anti-trust laws by coordinating surge pricing. 



July 2016: The Chinese government legalizes ride-hailing. Uber was hoping to beat out its main Chinese competitor, Didi Chuxing, and put a reported $2 billion into its business in China. Didi eventually emerged victorious, and later merged with Uber China in a $35 billion deal.

January 2017: President Donald Trump announces a travel ban to several majority Muslim countries. In response, protesters swarmed at a New York City airport, with taxi drivers striking in support. However, Uber continued to operate — leading to a backlash, as “hundreds of thousands” of customers took part in the viral #DeleteUber campaign.

February 2017: A former Uber engineer named Susan Fowler published a blog post with allegations of a toxic and sexist culture at the company. Kalanick pledges to look into the matter, and hires former US attorney general Eric Holder to lead an independent investigation into the company’s culture.

February 2017: Fowler’s story is followed by a New York Times report about Uber’s “aggressive, unrestrained workplace culture.” The story alleges that Uber employees did cocaine during a company retreat, and that a manager was fired after he was accused of groping multiple female employees.

September 2017: In a surprise move, Kalanick exercises his control over the last two Uber board seats under his control, and and appoints Xerox chairwoman Ursula Burns and former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain. The move seems to be designed to get ahead of proposed changes to the board structure that would limit Kalanick’s power.

November 2017: Bloomberg reports that Uber paid hackers $100,000 to cover up a massive data breach from October 2016 — when Kalanick was still in charge — that exposed the personal data of 57 million customers. In a statement, Khosrowshahi said: “None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it.”

January 2018: Uber officially closes a deal for Japanese investor SoftBank to take a 15% stake in the ride-hailing company, becoming its largest shareholder. The deal severely limits Kalanick’s influence and voting power on the board — and gives SoftBank a considerable discount on shares of Uber.

May 2019: Ahead of Uber’s IPO, drivers go on strike. Drivers protest declining pay, worsening conditions, and a lack of transparency from Uber, Lyft, and others. A workers union out of the United Kingdom called Uber’s IPO an “orgy of greed.”

San Francisco’s homeless population has swelled by 17% in two years, with most of that growth coming from people living out of their cars

San Francisco has long dealt with a homelessness crisis, exacerbated in part by the region’s technology boom and housing shortage, but a new street count of the city’s homeless shows just how bad it’s gotten.

An early summary of a one-night tally taken in January cast San Francisco’s homeless population at 8,011 — up 17% from two years ago, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. A key cause of the increase is a 45% rise in people living out of vehicles in the last two years.

But even the 8,011 count may not tell the whole story.

Federal guidelines are used to calculate these preliminary totals, not city guidelines, which include more nuanced classifications of homelessness, according to the Chronicle. So the actual count will likely be higher — like it was in 2017 when a preliminary street count of 6,858 preceded a more complete total of 7,499.

There were, however, a few positive changes in the preliminary report — the number of homeless veterans decreased by 14% and the number of homeless youths went down by 10%.

Nevertheless, the data is a grim reminder that San Francisco’s homelessness problem is not improving, especially at a time when another wave of wealth is expected to soon wash over the city. Multiple tech companies, including ride-sharing giant Uber, are gearing up for their 2019 IPOs, which could potentially result in a widened existing income inequity gap.

San Francisco has drummed up a number of solutions in recent years to battle its homelessness crisis. A bill passed in November, Proposition C, is expected to raise $300 million for homeless programs by raising taxes on tech companies. And plans for a 200-bed homeless shelter is in talks to go up along the city’s Embarcadero, angering some nearby neighbors who are protesting its construction. 

The state of California as a whole is also grappling with a homelessness problem — 24% of the total homeless population in the US lives in California.

Secretive investment firm Lone Pine Capital is quietly minting tech unicorns in Seattle

Some of Seattle’s hottest startups are taking big checks from a major investment firm that rarely bets on private companies. But if you haven’t heard the name Lone Pine Capital, you’re not alone.

The Greenwich, Conn.-based firm recently led a $114 million investment in sales automation startup Outreach and last year participated in a $185 million round for on-demand trucking startup Convoy. In each case, Lone Pine helped to create a new unicorn, pushing the companies’ valuations north of $1 billion.

Lone Pine is notoriously quiet and declined to comment for this article, citing a “no press policy.” The Outreach press release announcing the investment described the firm as “a private investment management company that manages three hedge funds, three long-only funds and a fund of funds. The funds have approximately $20 billion under management and consist of over 800 investors, predominantly individuals and non-profit organizations.”

What makes the investments in Convoy and Outreach remarkable is the fact that Lone Pine rarely invests in private companies. In the past decade, Lone Pine has only revealed stakes in seven private companies, and four of them — Chinese carmaker NIO, e-commerce pet supply store Chewy, Uber and Snap — have since gone public or plan to go public soon.

Outreach CEO Manny Medina told GeekWire that neither he nor most of his investors had heard of Lone Pine before the recent fundraising round. Despite that, Medina said that the hedge fund’s representatives “blew us away” from the start. Investors typically only have a faint understanding of the company during an initial meeting, but that wasn’t the case with Lone Pine.

“Lone Pine did all the research up front and they came back to us and told us why we are going to be the next Bloomberg for sales,” he said, referring to the financial terminal used by many investors. “They came with that thesis to us, saying, ‘I want to invest in this business; what do we need to do to make this happen?’”

Medina was also impressed by the fund’s track record. “They make very few investments, but they put a lot of money into each of those investments. And they have been incredibly successful,” he said.

Lone Pine has a long history of winning bets. LCH Investments, which ranks hedge funds, estimated that Lone Pine has taken in $26 billion in profits since the fund launched in 1997.

Stephen Mandel, Jr. launched Lone Pine after starting his career with investor Julian Robertson’s hedge fund Tiger Management — making him part of the class of “Tiger Cubs” who left to start their own investment ventures.

Mandel has since been hailed as “the best long-short hedge-fund manager of his generation” by Seth Klarman, CEO of the Baupost Group, another hedge fund. According to Forbes, Mandel is worth $2.4 billion and comes in at number 962 on its list of the richest people in the world.

We know much more about Lone Pine’s public company holdings, which show a healthy appetite for both tech and Seattle firms. Lone Pine owns more than $1 billion in stock in Amazon, Microsoft and Adobe, which collectively make up nearly a quarter of the fund’s total holdings. It’s also the largest shareholder in Paypal and owns $890 million worth of Facebook and nearly $900 million of IQVIA stock, according to regulatory filings.

Lone Pine has a reputation for investing in business fundamentals, but that hasn’t stopped it from embracing tech companies with pricey valuations but high potential for growth. The fund follows a long-short strategy, which involves both buying stocks it thinks will rise and selling short those it expects to fall.

It isn’t exactly rare for a hedge fund to take stakes in private companies, particularly late-stage ones. In the Seattle area, Chase Coleman’s Tiger Global Management, another successor to Robertson’s Tiger Management, has been gobbling up stakes in private companies left and right.

Tiger Global recently led a $28 million round in Karat, a platform for hiring technical roles. It also co-led a $43 million funding round in warehousing’ startup Flexe and spearheaded a $50 million round in spa and salon software startup Zenoti. The short list of Tiger’s other Seattle-area bets includes marketing startup Amperity; publicly-traded real estate giant Redfin; and OfferUp, a Craigslist competitor valued at more than $1 billion.

Tech bets have paid off for funds like Tiger Global, which reportedly made $3 billion off of a single investment in Indian e-commerce company Flipkart.

The appetite for Seattle-area tech startups might be signs of a new era for Lone Pine. Mandel stepped down from running firm’s day-to-day operations at the start of the year, passing the managerial reins to deputies David Craver, Mala Goankar and Kelly Granat. The firm doesn’t have any obvious connections to Seattle apart from its investments.

Earlier this week, Lone Pine announced yet another private company investment, participating in a funding round for New York-based luggage manufacturer Away.

One thing is certain: Lone Pine is looking for big paydays from its bets. In the firm’s own rare words, from the Outreach news release announcing its funding round: “[Outreach] sits in a category of untapped market potential with an opportunity for high growth.”
