It is hard to pick project "winners", especially at the starting gate so one is forced to proceed with several good bets. But one makes a mistake letting them continue to their logical conclusion - success or failure - whatever it might be. Stage gate framework and process provides a mechanism to assess, at periodic intervals, the value being delivered by a project portfolio and weed out its components i.e. individual projects that are not performing.
Stage gate is critical to innovation - it allows for mistakes but then minimizes their damage to business value.
