This paper presents a self-assessment by CIOs of their capabilities along four competencies that comprise the core skill set of the strategic CIO. Overall, the survey's results suggest that CIOs feel confident to step into strategic leadership roles. However, the CIOs responses to the detailed elements of the leadership competency profile suggest there remains a gap in whether they are perceived as leading the IT function, or leading the business more broadly.
