Digital transformation has emerged as a strategic imperative for organizations across industries as businesses confront new challenges and opportunities in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. The impact of digital innovation on the interface of business and IT has been significant, but realizing the potential of digital requires effective alignment between these two areas. However, achieving alignment between business and IT has proven difficult due to significant social factors.

As a CIO, you play a vital role in navigating your organization through the challenges of digital transformation. These challenges include integrating new digital technologies into existing processes, developing new digital strategies and business models, and fostering a culture of innovation and agility. The opportunities for growth and innovation are equally compelling, underscoring the need for senior executives and CIOs to master this area.

This study provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of digital business transformation. It explores the implications of digital business transformation for business-IT alignment, the evolution of digital leadership roles, and the design of the IT organization. The study found that mutual understanding between CEOs and CIOs is crucial for a successful business-IT partnership, highlighting the bidirectional effects of active and passive understanding on the CEO-CIO relationship. The study also investigated the role of the CDO and the CIO and found four different CDO role types to exist, which had implications for the development of the CIO role.

The study explains the role of bimodal IT as a transitional stage in a larger transformation of the IT function to foster IT agility and exploration. The findings guide in achieving social alignment between CEOs and CIOs and promoting CIOs’ understanding of current business topics. The study also calls for a more fine-grained conceptualization of CEO-CIO mutual understanding, provide initial insights into the emerging Chief Digital Officer role and its creation, prepares a framework for bimodal IT, and explains its relevance for IT transformation.

This study encourages practitioners and academics to carefully delimit the CDO role from the CIO role and harness the learnings from bimodal IT on their digital transformation journey. The research findings provide valuable guidance for senior executives and CIOs on the challenges and opportunities of digital business transformation, highlighting the importance of achieving social alignment between business and IT and promoting CIOs’ understanding of current business topics.
