A Primer on Models of Leadership

Create a framework to guide your leadership journey. Read On!

A leadership model is a framework that you use to guide your behavior as a leader. It can be composed of concepts and practices from a variety of different models, or it can be based on your own personal experiences and beliefs. The key thing is that it provides a visual representation of what matters most to you as it relates to your leadership style and how you want to behave in order to achieve your goals.

While leadership models are guides that show different ways to lead, they can be contrasted with leadership styles, which represent how an individual leader behaves. A style of leadership is often based on the leader's personality, industry, and workplace culture. Additionally, a style of leadership can be tailored to fit the demands of a specific situation. In this way, a style of leadership can make or break a project or team.

Successful leaders are always learning. They know that in order to be successful, they need to continually develop their skills and knowledge. This includes taking the time to learn about the organization they lead as well as topics important to them personally. Leaders who make this a priority are more likely to be effective and achieve long-term success.

Leaders who are successful go beyond style and situation. They incorporate behavior development and creating value by developing positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Leaders must understand that their behaviors are key in order to uphold and influence the organization’s culture, vision, mission, values and goals which are essential for sustaining company success. Furthermore, they model and influence credibility, respect, fairness, pride, trust and camaraderie into the culture of the company in order to have a great workplace.

There are many leadership models and each leader also has their own unique way of leading, their own approach and as such their own tailor-made leadership model. CIOs are well served creating a leadership model for themselves.
