Benchmarking has made a lot of money for a lot of analysts and consulting firms. There are people who take benchmarking numbers to heart and repeat them to others without consideration of the meaning or consequences. Then there are those of us who understand but still use these numbers to further our agenda. How many of you are willing to admit that you have used benchmarking to deflect your own organization's shortcoming by making the point: "we just do not spend enough on IT," as if spending more would fix all the issues.
