In a dramatic first, CEO 3.0 has just been launched. This new and improved model is equipped with special skills to build teams. Please stay tuned for further details.
Stop the presses. Drop whatever you are doing. Listen up. Pay attention for this will not last long. A new flavor of the month has just been announced. The C.E.O 3.0 model is being launched this month. This new and improved C.E.O will change the face of business. The media blitz will reach a crescendo over the next few weeks so stay tuned.
If you a C.E.O then you need to immediately retool or, in the least, read up on this so you can pretend to be version 3.0. If you aspire to be one, then also pay attention because this is the time to bake this puppy in. If you are a leader of some other variety, say CIO, then you need to understand what your boss is going to look like in oh not so distant a future.
The intellectually curious amongst you won’t take this at face value. You want me to elaborate. Fine, be that way.
Pundits have declared that the C.E.O pokemon (This won’t make sense if you don’t have an 11 year old at home!) has taken on a new avatar, namely C.E.O 3.0. Here are the details.
You see, C.E.O. 1.0 model was launched in the 80s. This model of the C.E.O was the empire builder. Sanford Weill of Citigroup, Gerald Levin of Time Warner etc. are cast from this mold. They focused on building their respective companies to huge empires and then lived happily ever after. The end.
Then came, what we can only assume is C.E.O 2.0. This is your Chuck Prince of Citigroup and Richard Parsons of Time Warner. We will call them ‘Bob the Builders” for they were adept at reconstructing these falling towers of the corporate world.
Now, with the departure of Mr. Prince of Citi and Mr. O’Neill of Merrill, there is a realization that the time has come to unleash C.E.O. 3.0! The business world needs a “team builder” now. And 3.0 has been designed to do just that.
That is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Here is some simple advice for simpletons who want to venture into journalism. A C.E.O. is a leader. A leader is nothing without their team. If a leader does not focus on team building, they might as well practice saying “would you like fries with that?” and “thank you for your order.”
So, what have we learnt? Either the C.E.O has finally realized that they are leaders or they have started taking their role more seriously. In either case, team building should be in the bag of tricks of C.E.O 1.0 not C.E.O 3.0. The C.E.Os are finally going to do what they should have from the get go.
For those of you who are yawning. Go to sleep. Nothing has changed. The pundits just wanted something new to remain relevant. Their careers depend on it!
