This foundation allows them to develop essential problem-solving skills, empathy for end-users, and a comprehensive understanding of how technology supports business objectives.

To help visualize these pathways, I have created a detailed diagram that illustrates the various career trajectories of an IT professional who starts from the Help Desk ranks. This diagram shows the potential avenues for advancement and the typical milestones along the way, reinforcing that a deep understanding of IT at every level can significantly benefit leadership development. Still, understandably, several other discrete career evolutions also exist as subsets of what I have shown.

Their hands-on experience allows them to relate to the challenges faced by their teams and provide practical guidance and support. They are also better equipped to anticipate potential issues and develop proactive solutions to mitigate risks.

They are more likely to invest in their team’s growth and create opportunities for junior staff to develop their skills and progress in their careers.
